Way back in the
late 40's and 50's, our parents owned property on Route 66
in Oklahoma. The first place was a dairy farm. (Click here
to see our Dairy Farm Sale Bill.) The second was a general
store located next door to the now internationally famous
Old Round Barn of Arcadia. Route66Proud.com was created in
memory of that general store, as well as Lovingier's, the
gift shop that Edith, our mother, and Donna owned in Houston.
(Below, see the
vacant store building with the barn in the background, photographed
by our father many years after we had sold it.)

The
old round barn, built in 1898, is a great attraction
to Route 66 travelers.
After
years of neglect a group of folks proud of their heritage
got together and rebuilt the barn and created the arcadia
historical & preservation society.

During our childhood
days, we lived beside Route 66 above our parents' store. Can
you imagine living less than 40 feet away from that heavily
traveled highway's edge? Today, one would say we literally "lived
on the edge"!
While living there beside Route
66, Randy, our baby brother was born in 1953. (See his photo
insert at seven months above in postcard and his other postcards
in our Photo
Gallery.) We recognize him here, not only because he was
such a cute little thing, but because of his determination
in defeating cancer, diagnosed when he was 21. Before being
diagnosed, he had graduated from Northwestern University's
prestigious Medill School of Journalism. During his battle
with cancer, he won national awards for his coverage of teacher
strikes in Illinois. In August of 2003, he celebrated his
50th birthday in Houston, Texas. Today there is nothing that
makes him happier than getting on his motorcycle and heading
out with the guys on road trips to parts unknown or revisit
some of their favorite places. (See Randy pictured below on
his motorcycle.) His determination reflects the spirit of
Route 66er's everywhere!

| Our parents, Cliff and Edith, built
a successful business. Back in those days our store was the
busiest place in town. Later we moved to Edmond for educational
reasons. Eventually, our parents sold the store, and we moved
away so they could teach school. Their last twenty years of
teaching were in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, but they
lived their final years in Houston, Texas.
Edith's best friend and former college roommate,
Mrs. James Campbell (Aggie), from Edmond always kept the family
informed about the barn - its decaying condition, roof collapse,
and restoration. We were thrilled when Aggie told us the barn
was like new again.
(See Cliff, Edith, and Aggie below at Cliff
and Edith's fiftieth wedding anniversary in Houston.)

Arcadia's
most comfortable place to eat. The food's great and
the people are wonderful: Hillbillee's
Bed & Breakfast, and Restaurant.

You're looking east, down
America's Mother Road,
Route 66.

"We had some amazing life experiences
while living on Route 66! Part of it was a feeling you got from
living so close to such a busy highway; always wondering about
the people driving by.... Who were they, and where were they
going so fast?.... Were any of them rich and famous? Some had
to be. There's one thing for sure. We had some super customers
who made lasting impressions on this child. On Route 66, there
was always a feeling of optimism and excitement in the air -
a feeling that once you've had --- you never forget."
