Route
66 History
The Old Round Barn of Arcadia, Oklahoma
|
| The Old Round Barn in Arcadia, Oklahoma, is
known around the world. If you stop by and visit the Gift Shop,
managed by Butch Bregger, you will be amazed at the many different
countries and continents listed by guests as being their homes.
The barn was built in 1898 and is listed by the National Preservation
Historical Society.
We love to say, because it is true, that we
had two very famous neighbors, Route 66 and The Old Round
Barn. We lived less than 40 feet away from the edge of The
Mother Road on the second floor of our parent's general store
on Route 66, and The Old Round Barn was practically in our
back yard. As a child, I couldn't understand why this wonderful
barn was in the middle of town, one of the curiosities about
the barn. You have to know the history about the fire that
almost destroyed a thriving little Oklahoma town to understand
why.
We do want you to go to The Old Round Barn's
website for a lot more information, but first Click Here and
listen to Donna's song that she wrote about the barn. She
loves the barn so much, as everyone does. She uses her family
to tell the story about the barn. It is historically accurate
and, at one time, was voted to be the barn's theme song.

To learn about The
Old Round Barn
The Disney movie, Cars,
that came out on June 9 was, as we have been told, originally
named or considered to be named Route 66.
Here is an excerpt from an article written
about Cars:
During the "hurry up and wait" conversations
between shoots, Wallis (Michael Wallis, prolific Route 66
writer) told me that he and the Disney crew had shot footage
of the following:
- Dean Walker of the Kansas
Route 66 Association, who provided at least some of
the inspiration for
Mater the tow truck in Cars. One of Walker's
claims to fame is he is able to turn his feet completely
backwards.
- The
Rainbow Bridge in Riverton, Kan.
- Scott Nelson at his Eisler
Bros. Store in Riverton, Kan., who sang his usual rendition
of "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66." Wallis said
Cars director John Lasseter is a fan of the store's
hand-made sandwiches.
- The Round
Barn of Arcadia, Okla., along with its affable caretaker,
Butch.
Butch is definitely a friend of Route 66 Proud.
He was my older brother, Ron's, childhood playmate. They played
around the barn all the time. There weren't that many places
to play when you live right beside Route 66. In my historically
accurate story in song about the barn which I call "The
Barn Song", Butch is referred to as Little Butchie Jones.
Visiting the barn today would not be the same without Butch.
You can find him in the Gift Shop. He has become a folk legend
to us, as he must have become to many.
